Abstract
This study focuses on the aerodynamic characterisation of the interaction of side-by-side propellers and on the assessment of the effects they exert on a lifting wing located in their slipstream. An experimental approach was adopted using a half wing model placed in the D3M wind tunnel at Politecnico di Torino. The wing is equipped with an array of three propellers positioned in close proximity to one another in front of the finite wing in a tractor configuration. This configuration allows for the investigation, on the central propeller, of the mutual interaction effects between the propellers and the wing. The main objective of this study is to explore how the aerodynamic performance is affected by variations in relative direction of rotation, advance ratio and angles of incidence.
A further objective of this study is to characterise the flow field features associated with the interaction of the slipstreams generated by the propellers in distributed propulsion arrangement, when operating in forward flight at low Reynolds numbers
