Abstract
The aviation industry plays a fundamental role in the global transportation network, enabling worldwide connectivity and driving economic growth. Yet air traffic is responsible for roughly 3.5% of human induced climate warming, a share expected to grow as flight numbers increase and aviation remains one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. The industry is consequently developing technologies capable of drastically cutting its environmental footprint. LH2 powered aircraft stand out as a convincing pathway toward zero carbon emissions and a substantial reduction in other pollutants. Realizing this potential, however, demands overcoming significant technological challenges. To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the aviation industry is developing the onboard technologies necessary to make hydrogen powered aircraft a reality.
This will only be possible if the appropriate refuelling infrastructure is in place
