Abstract
Space-based Solar Radiation Management approaches represent proposed technological solutions to actively mitigate one of the most significant challenges of the contemporary era: anthropogenic climate change. The increase in global average temperatures threatens natural ecosystems and societal security, demanding a global effort to counteract its effects. Decarbonization strategies alone may not be sufficient. The deployment of Space-based Solar Geoengineering concepts, aimed at reducing the solar radiation incident on Earth and influencing its energy balance, may represent an effective adaptation strategy to contain global warming. In this way, average temperatures could be maintained within safe limits while providing additional time for long-term decarbonization solutions to reverse greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere.
Among emerging Space-based Solar Geoengineering proposals is the Planetary Sunshade System (PSS), a large-scale architecture based on the Space Mirror concept
