Abstract
Over the past few years, the increasing interest in lunar exploration and the development of permanent space infrastructures has driven the need for advanced power management solutions. In this context, Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) systems have emerged as a promising approach to mitigate the effects of long lunar nights and eclipse periods by enabling energy transfer without relying on local solar generation. ORiS, an Italian start-up, is currently developing a WPT system based on a high-power laser as the transmission source. Thermal management of the laser diodes represent one of the main challenges of the system, as its limited efficiency leads to significant waste heat that must be effectively dissipated.
To address this issue, a hybrid thermal architecture combining a Phase Change Material (PCM) and a magnetohydrodynamically (MHD) pumped liquid metal loop has been proposed
