Abstract
The atomisation of a liquid jet injected into a gaseous crossflow is a fundamental process in aerospace propulsion systems, including gas turbine combustors and liquid rocket engines. High-fidelity simulations that explicitly track the interface between the liquid and the gas can resolve the breakup of the jet in detail, but at a computational cost that remains prohibitive for parametric design studies. This work presents the development and implementation, within the open-source OpenFOAM framework, of an enhanced Lagrangian spray model in which the liquid is represented as a cloud of computational parcels rather than as a resolved interface, providing a far less expensive alternative suited to design exploration.
The model couples an established treatment of the breakup of the intact liquid column with a ligament-based correction of the resulting fragment sizes, a drag law that accounts for the deformation of the droplets, and a secondary breakup mechanism that further fragments them according to the local aerodynamic loading
