The thesis explores the role of fire as an agent of landscape production through a framework of chemical and alchemical processes. Beyond visible flames and wildfires, fire expands in ‘embodiments’, to energetic combustion and warfare, producing lands. As such, the research territorialises in the Mediterranean region through speculative cartographies, a terraqueous pyroscape of blurred shorelines. Amid a global ecological emergency, the thesis investigates the area affected by the largest wildfire in the last half-century in Cyprus (in July 2025), an island significantly nested in conflagration. Understanding its Mediterranean fire ecology and the unfolding of historical landscape-extractive policies, it invites reflection: How do we live amidst progressively flaming landscapes? Drawing upon vernacular architecture systems, artistic practices, and political ecology literature, the project recognises fire as the ‘architect of landscapes’, engaging with the concept of Pyrography, aiming to explore different means of inhabitation amidst flames, ashes, and residue..
