Abstract
The objective evaluation of facial mimicry and functional neuromuscular recovery represents a challenge in the clinical management of patients undergoing orthognathic and maxillofacial surgeries. Structural skeletal dysmorphologies, such as severe jaw asymmetries, impair facial aesthetics at rest and affect the active dynamics of expressions during social interactions. Surgical corrections, including Le Fort I osteotomy for the maxilla and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) for the mandible, involve structural displacements that alter the anatomical resting length, muscle pre-tractions, and overall biomechanical balance of perioral soft tissues. Traditional clinical follow-ups predominantly rely on subjective visual scales or static three-dimensional imaging techniques, which do not record velocity, acceleration, and sub-clinical dynamic compensations during spontaneous movement.
To address these limitations, this thesis work implements a non-invasive, markerless computational protocol based on Computer Vision techniques to quantitatively evaluate the longitudinal rearrangement of facial mimicry
