Abstract
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and lethal primary brain tumor, identified as grade IV by the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Despite its relatively low incidence, it is characterized by an extremely poor prognosis, with a median survival of approximately 14-15 months from diagnosis. Its progression leads to substantial alterations of the neurovascular unit (NVU), a functional multicellular structure composed by endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, microglia and neurons, essential for maintaining cerebral homeostasis. In particular, GBM can also promote the blood permeability, leading to hemorrhagic areas, and loss of blood brain barrier (BBB) selective and protective functions of the brain.
The current standard therapeutic treatment for GBM consists of a maximal safe surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy
