Abstract
Over the past decades, Earth Observation satellites have become essential across many fields, in particular weather forecasting and climate monitoring. As part of this continuous advancement, the MetOp Second Generation satellites, EUMETSAT’s next-generation polar-orbiting platforms, will provide observations of substantially improved quality for more than two decades. Among the instruments they carry, the Microwave Imager (MWI) is affected by striping patterns: a low-frequency flicker component in the receiver electronics causes the signal to drift slowly over time, which, once folded into the scan geometry, manifests as a coherent directional pattern. As the brightness temperatures measured by the instrument are directly assimilated into numerical weather prediction models, this spatial artefact risks being misinterpreted as a genuine geophysical feature, degrading downstream applications and motivating the need for dedicated destriping algorithms.
The goal of this thesis is to prepare the dataset and the performance baseline for a scientific challenge, an open competition through which the research community can develop novel destriping methods
