Abstract
Introduction: Accelerating cycles of technological innovation and shorter product lifespans have made Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) one of the fastest-growing global solid waste streams. Within the European circular economy framework, temperature exchange equipment—designated as Category 1 (R1)—demands complex end-of-life management due to the environmental risks of processing fluids embedded in cooling circuits and rigid polyurethane insulation foams. While current manufacturing utilizes low-Global Warming Potential hydrocarbons like pentane, a significant volume of legacy chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) units continues to enter regional collection lines, challenging existing recycling infrastructures. Problem Statement: This thesis analyzes Transistor S.r.l., a commercial recycling subsidiary of the Arcobaleno Social Cooperative operating an R1-certified facility in Leinì, Torino.
The plant currently operates under a single-stream regional Environmental Integrated Authorization that restricts mechanical processing strictly to non-fluorinated, pentane-insulated appliances
