Abstract
The continuous increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the related impact on climate change have driven an urgent need for sustainable technologies for the energy transition. In this context, a novel artificial photosynthetic concept using "soft" membranes (specifically, soap films) has been recently proposed within the framework of the EU H2020-FETOPEN project Sofia. Such concept was conceived to overcome the typical limitations of conventional solid-state photocatalysis, such as high material costs and the formation of microbubbles that deactivate catalytic surfaces. This thesis focuses on the experimental analysis and optimization of a prototype reactor, named Butterfly-Shaped Reactor, originally conceptualized and developed within the Sofia project.
The reactor relies on a three-dimensional structure of soap films, which is opportunely functionalized to become photo-reactive
