Abstract
Urban stormwater management is increasingly challenged by urbanization, climate change, and the growth of impervious surfaces. This thesis analyzes a residential catchment in Pinerolo, Italy, using the Rational Method for a 10-year return period storm, and evaluates the capacity of the existing drainage network. The results show that the estimated peak discharge, 1.944 m³/s, exceeds the pipe capacity of about 1.613 m³/s, indicating a hydraulic deficit. To address this issue, two building-scale SuDs solutions were assessed: rainwater harvesting tanks and rain gardens. The standard tank scenario provides 237 m³ of storage and reduces about 24% of total runoff volume, while rain gardens provide about 467.6 m³ of temporary storage and 8.1 m³ of infiltration capacity, reducing nearly 48% of total runoff.
Overall, the study confirms that decentralized SuDs can reduce runoff, relieve pressure on the drainage network, and improve urban flood resilience.
