Abstract
The increasing urgency of addressing atmospheric carbon dioxide accumulation has led to growing interest in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies, which are regarded as a complementary approach to conventional decarbonization strategies. Among these, Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technologies are emerging as a promising route for CO₂ removal, exploiting the ability of seawater to absorb and store carbon dioxide in the form of dissolved inorganic carbon. The aim of this thesis is to assess the preliminary feasibility of an emerging DOC technology based on the chloride-mediated electrochemical process proposed by MIT. The process relies on an electrochemical pH swing of seawater to convert bicarbonate and carbonate species into molecular CO₂, which is then separated from the liquid phase and recovered as a concentrated stream.
The reference experimental process showed the removal of approximately 87% of dissolved inorganic carbon, with a specific electrical energy consumption of 122 kJ/mol CO₂
