Abstract
This thesis focuses on the metallographic and microstructural characterization of Silicon (Si) systems containing Silicon Carbide (SiC) produced by the additive manufacturing technology Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (EB-PBF). The primary objective is to analyze how the process parameters and SiC formation influence the microstructure in the component. The Si–SiC system was prepared by blending Si and carbon (C) powders. The mixed powders were subsequently processed by the additive manufacturing process, which triggered an in situ reaction between Si and C, leading to the formation of SiC within the Si matrix. The production of Si–SiC components via additive manufacturing represents a promising approach to reducing the high costs associated with traditional processing routes, especially for complex geometries.
The experimental study focused on the characterization of samples produced with varying carbon contents, as well as pure Silicon
