Implementation and industrial validation of a surface protection technology for defect reduction in luxury eyewear manufacturing.
Rel. Maurizio Schenone. Politecnico di Torino, Master of science program in Mechanical Engineering, 2026
Abstract
This thesis presents the validation of Dip Coating, a new project developed within EssilorLuxottica and experimentally integrated into the industrial production flow with the objective of reducing rework costs and improving the final quality of eyeglass components. The work was conducted during an internship within the Manufacturing Engineering (ME) team at the Lauriano plant and focused on evaluating the effectiveness of applying a temporary protective film on the external surfaces of eyeglass temples. The protective film is intended to prevent scratches, abrasions, and handling-related defects during downstream processes, ultimately improving end-of-line performance. The study was structured into multiple iterative phases. The initial phase concentrated on the integration of the Dip Coating project within the existing production flow and on the identification of issues related to the prototype machine, process stability, and operator interaction.
Collaboration with several internal departments—including HSE, ergonomics, and production engineering—supported the refinement of safety measures, ergonomic setups, and handling procedures
