Abstract
This thesis focus on the feasibility of a CubeSat demonstrator for INAF’s astrometric telescope, RAFTER. The primary objective is to evaluate the achievable pointing stability, with performance assessed against the requirements and parameters defined by the ESA ECSS standards. The thesis is organized as follows: • Chapter 1 provides an overview of the scientific background, relevant literature, and the technical context of the RAFTER telescope. • Chapter 2 presents the mission definition, including objectives, requirements, and constraints, and proposes a preliminary CubeSat system architecture. • Chapter 3 discusses the design and development of the CubeSat Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS), taking as reference commercial offthe- shelf components listed in the NASA CubeSat State-of-the-Art database.
• Chapter 4 introduces the simulation environment and describes the design of four attitude controllers according to ESA ECSS guidelines, exploiting intrinsic controller characteristics for tuning
