Presizing of electromechanical thrust reverser actuation systems for the next generations of propulsion systems.
Rel. Dario Giuseppe Pastrone. Politecnico di Torino, Master of science program in Aerospace Engineering, 2026
Abstract
The Thrust Reverser Actuation System (TRAS) is a critical component of aircraft engine nacelles, responsible for controlling thrust reversers to decelerate the aircraft during landing. This thesis focuses on the development of an innovative end-to-end pre-sizing method for electromechanical TRAS used on Airbus A320neo, A350, and A380 aircraft. The primary objective is to create a tool capable of estimating the system's geometric and mass characteristics as a function of the operating environment, serving both as support for the study of future system architectures and as an effective means to challenge supplier companies according to the requirements (since Airbus does not manufacture the TRAS components but relies on third-party companies for production).
The method used departs from common scaling laws based on industrial catalogs, which are often limited by data reliability, and instead adopts a comprehensive sizing approach based on the operating and failure modes of each component
