Abstract
Manual wheelchair propulsion is a physically demanding task that repeatedly strains the upper limbs and can lead to overuse injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. To perform a quantitative biomechanical analysis, the most common laboratory approach involves the use of optoelectronic motion capture systems, which accurately reconstruct the movement of body segments. However, these systems are expensive, complex, and difficult to use in everyday settings. In this context, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) represent a promising alternative due to their portability, low cost, and potential for out-of-laboratory applications. Nevertheless, the lack of precise time synchronisation between these two systems remains a major obstacle to correctly identifying key biomechanical events, such as the beginning and end of the push phase.
The aim of this thesis is to develop a robust, signal-based algorithm capable of automatically synchronising data acquired from motion capture and inertial sensors during manual wheelchair propulsion tests, and to evaluate its suitability for supporting performance-related biomechanical analysis
