The introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has significantly improved survival outcomes across a wide spectrum of metastatic malignancies. However, their mechanism of action can trigger immune-related adverse events, including acute kidney injury (AKI), whose incidence and long-term prognostic impact remain subjects of investigation. Based on the cohort analyzed by García-Carro et al. (2022), the present study extends the follow-up to six years, to further clarify the mortality risk associated with all-cause AKI and characterize the evolution of renal function over time. A total of 759 patients, treated with ICIs or combination regimens at Vall d’Hebron Hospital between 2018 and 2024, were analyzed based on demographic and clinical data and serial serum creatinine (sCr) measurements.
