Abstract
Interest in the exploration and exploitation of the stratosphere is rapidly growing, particularly for future Earth Observation and Telecommunication applications. In this context, Stratobotic aims to develop solutions based on a blended configuration that combines a fixed-wing UAV, an innovative airship, and a stratospheric balloon, both filled with lighterthan-air gases such as Helium or Hydrogen (He/H2). The company goal is to improve the operational autonomy of these systems by remaining weight compliant, as per European regulation ((EU) 923/2012 – SERA). The objective of this thesis is the design, modeling, and prototyping of an innovative power harvesting system capable of increasing flight autonomy, thereby overcoming current technological limitations.
The system, called Stratofloater, positioned between the fixed-wing UAV and the aerostatic balloon, consists of a solar concentrator that focuses irradiance onto a vertically arranged bifacial solar panel
