Design and Techno-Economic Evaluation of a Stand-Alone Battery Energy Storage System.
Rel. Filippo Spertino. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Energetica E Nucleare, 2026
Abstract
The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources and the European Union’s decarbonization goals have highlighted the crucial role of energy storage in enhancing grid flexibility, and market efficiency. Among the available technologies, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are gaining momentum for their scalability, modularity, and rapid response capabilities. Although BESS are often implemented in hybrid configurations alongside photovoltaic or wind plants, this thesis focuses specifically on the design, analysis, and management of a stand – alone BESS, a system operating independently from any renewable generation source. The project under investigation il located in Cefalù, Sicily, and involves the preliminary development of a 100 MW / 400 MWh lithium-ion BESS, to be installed within a 1-hectare industrial area.
The system will be connected to the national grid and is primarily intended for energy arbitrage and participation in the MACSE (Meccanismo di Approvvigionamento di Capacità di Stoccaggio Elettrico), the centralized Italian capacity market for energy storage managed by Terna, the national grid operator
