Abstract
The transition towards a decarbonised energy system has reinforced the strategic importance of resilient, low-carbon generation. Within this context, ocean energy, and in particular Wave Energy Converters (WECs), represents a promising resource for coastal nations. This thesis examines three WEC technologies, a tightly moored point absorber (CorPower), a submerged point absorber (CETO 6), and a pivotal wave energy converter, across multiple maritime locations characterised by diverse sea states. Their performance is assessed through numerical simulations based on a linear potential flow model to represent wave–structure interactions, combined with hydrodynamic analysis and subsequent modelling, optimisation and performance evaluation in MATLAB. The resulting configurations are extended to additional sites in order to explore scalability and site adaptability under different wave climates.
The technical analysis is integrated with an economic assessment through the evaluation of key performance indicators, including Annual Energy Production (AEP) and Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE), to identify the most suitable technology for each sea condition
