Abstract
Fiber lasers (FLs) have emerged as one of the most promising solid-state laser technologies due to their compactness, high efficiency, excellent beam quality and thermal management enabled by the large surface-to-volume ratio of optical fibers. Among them, Thulium-Doped Fiber Lasers (TDFLs) operating in the 2 µm spectral region have attracted significant interest across a wide range of applications. This spectral window falls within the "eye-safe" band and exhibits strong water absorption peaks, making TDFLs highly effective in medical procedures and LIDAR systems. Moreover, they can be used as pump source for mid-IR systems, which are particularly suitable for remote sensing, environmental monitoring and polymer processing.
In many of these fields, pulsed operation offers key benefits, since combines the localized delivery typical of FLs with high peak powers by concentrating energy in short temporal windows, which would not be possible to obtain in continuous wave (CW) regime
