Abstract
Radiation-hardened hardware components are widely adopted in space systems to ensure reliable operation in radiation-prone environments, where high energy particles may induce transient or permanent faults. Rad-hard devices are manufactured using specialized processes and design techniques that mitigate the negative effects of radiation, but, although they provide superior reliability, they also offer lower performance, reduced integration density, longer lead times, and significantly higher cost compared to Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) alternatives. Cost becomes a critical constraint in low-budget platforms such as CubeSats and in large satellite constellations, where the unit cost of onboard computing systems has a substantial impact in the overall mission.
