Abstract
This thesis examines whether, and under what conditions, working time flexibility may be interpreted as a form of organisational innovation in contexts characterised by strong structural constraints. While contemporary debates on work flexibility frequently focus on spatial arrangements and remote working, this study places working time at the centre of analysis, conceptualising it as a key organisational lever shaping coordination, control, and autonomy within firms. The empirical investigation is conducted within the Italian electricity sector, identified as a critical context due to its high operational intensity, service continuity requirements, and stringent safety standards. In such environments, working time constitutes not merely a contractual parameter but a stabilising organisational regime that structures interdependence and synchronisation across roles.
Adopting an exploratory qualitative research design, the study draws on semi-structured interviews and a focus group involving major firms in the sector, complemented by selected comparative cases in other industries
