Abstract
This thesis addresses the design of ceremonial and support spaces for SOCREM Turin, an institution that has played a central role in shaping cremation practices in Italy since 1883. Within the contemporary landscape of funerary architecture, crematoria increasingly operate as civic infrastructures that must reconcile technical efficiency with atmospheric sensitivity. The project develops an architectural response for the delicate period preceding cremation comprising ceremonial halls, gathering spaces, waiting rooms, administrative offices, and ancillary facilities where the emotional, social, and spatial dimensions of mourning converge. The work is anchored in a critical reading of the architectural culture of death, drawing from the historiographical studies of Philippe Ariès and the typological analyses of Howard Colvin, Hilary J.
