Integrating Individual, Community, and Spatial Factors in Transport Planning: Understanding Travel Behaviour for Sustainable Mobility.
Rel. Cristina Pronello. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Digital Skills For Sustainable Societal Transitions, 2026
Abstract
Abstract The transition to sustainable mobility requires more than infrastructural investment; it demands a profound understanding of the psychosocial mechanisms driving travel behaviour. This thesis operationalises the Attitude–Behaviour Gap within the specific context of the Amedeo Avogadro Technical Institute in Turin, adopting a Living Lab approach. By integrating the General Ecological Behaviour (GEB) scale with Social Cognitive Theory (SCogT) constructs derived from the Triadic Reciprocal Determinism framework and objective spatial accessibility metrics, the study isolates the barriers preventing pro-environmental intentions from translating into action. The empirical analysis identifies a clear differentiation within the student population. While a minority belongs to the Gap Group, individuals with high environmental disposition who nonetheless rely on private motorised transport, a substantial share falls into the Potential Shift category, using sustainable modes despite low pro-environmental motivation.
These findings challenge conventional modal shift policies, indicating that for a large segment of the youth population, the primary policy objective should focus on retaining existing sustainable behaviours rather than solely promoting behavioural conversion.
