Abstract:

The tension between freedom and constraint is a constant in architecture. Despite the widespread celebration of creative freedom, there is still a debate about how contextual constraints affect architectural results. The question of whether some architectural constraints like environmental regulations, material availability, technological conditions, and visibility impact assessment is investigated in this thesis, exploring their intersections with architectural thinking, sometimes as challenges and other times as generative forces. An example of how architecture can flourish not in spite of limitations but rather despite them is a semi-submerged intervention in the Lago Di Braies, Dolomites, where these constraints are transformed into a narrative tool rather than a restriction.
