Abstract
This dissertation examines the role of smart contracts and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in shaping urban experiments, exploring how these technologies are being utilized and tested in cities to transform governance, services, and citizen engagement. It studies global cases such as Singapore, Dubai, New York, and others to evaluate the implementation, opportunities, and limitations of blockchain technologies in urban contexts. Findings highlight the potential of smart contracts and NFTs to increase transparency, streamline processes, and improve citizen participation. However, challenges like regulatory compliance, scalability, and public trust remain. Ultimately, the thesis provides insight into how urban testbeds are being used to pilot these innovations, offering a nuanced understanding of their transformative potential and practical limitations in urban governance.
