Haptic Feedback and Gamification Improve Virtual Reality Indoor Navigation.
Rel. Fabrizio Lamberti, Claudio Pacchierotti. Politecnico di Torino, Master of science program in Cinema And Media Engineering, 2025
Abstract
Navigating complex indoor environments can be challenging, particularly for individuals with impairments. This study explores the integration of virtual reality (VR), haptic feedback, and gamification to create an intuitive and engaging navigation system. Haptic feedback is provided through a custom multi-actuator vibrotactile handle, that combines hard and soft materials to deliver precise and discernable vibrations at the palm. The system employs real-time pathfinding, with gamification elements enhancing user motivation through challenges and rewards. A user study involving 18 participants evaluated navigation accuracy, task completion time, and feedback preferences. Results indicate that combined feedback modalities is preferred over visual or haptic feedback alone.
Gamification elements further enhanced engagement by fostering a sense of progression and achievement
