Techno-Economic Analysis of Energy Solutions for Corporate Profitability – The Case Study on an Industrial Plant in Cooperation with Edison Next.
Rel. Andrea Lanzini. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Energetica E Nucleare, 2024
Abstract
This thesis presents a techno-economic analysis of energy solutions for the decarbonisation and energy efficiency of an industrial plant, conducted in collaboration with Edison Next. The main objective is to evaluate two proposed cogeneration technologies: a simple cycle based on internal combustion engines and a combined cycle with turbogas coupled with steam turbines. Each configuration was analysed for energy efficiency, operating and investment costs, and environmental impact, with a focus on the ability of each to meet the plant's specific energy needs. The analysis shows that the simple cycle, characterised by an ‘Electricity Load-Following’ approach, is optimal for sites with high electrical demand, while the combined cycle, ‘Thermal Load-Following’, offers a more flexible management of thermal production, making it suitable for sites with variable thermal demand.
The results show that both solutions improve the overall efficiency of the plant by reducing dependence on the external power grid
