Abstract:

This thesis focuses on an economic analysis of the Sicilian economy, with a general overview on the last 150 years using the available data, and a more detailed analysis on the last 30 years. The aim of the thesis is not to find solutions, but the more detailed and complete analysis possible of the state of the economy, also "taking advantage" of the personal eye of the student coming from Sicily, and perhaps propose what could be done different in terms of political manouvers that have been put in place. In the first part, through an in-depth historical, geographical, and administrative analysis, a comprehensive picture is painted of the regional dynamics that have influenced the Sicilian economy. It explores how Sicily's integration into the Italian state has shaped its institutional and administrative framework, influencing regional economic policies. In the second part, the focus shifts to the macroeconomic dimension. Key indicators are examined, including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the structure of the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors, the rate of education, employment and unemployment rates, import and export dynamics, and other relevant economic factors. This analysis provides a comprehensive view of Sicily's current economic situation, and over the last 25-30 years, identifying challenges and opportunities. Through a historical-economic perspective, this thesis aims to shed light on the progress made by Sicily over the years while also pinpointing areas where further efforts are needed to promote sustainable economic development. It represents a significant contribution to understanding the economic evolution of a unique and complex region, with important implications for future policies and growth strategies.
