Abstract: |
This thesis discusses the feasibility of opening the 8 km Navigli Canal in Milan and transforms the traffic pattern and the surrounding green spaces and public spaces, aims to help Milan citizen to strengthen their identification of the canal, meanwhile improve the quality of the urban territory of Milan. By searching the government's principle to understand the views and requests of the people of Milan on the canal, researching the current state of the site, and conducting a referendum, we analyzed the economic viability and citizen acceptance of opening the canal, and through a specific site design for Parco Paolo Giovanni II, we emphasized the bicycle system and the reduction of flooding risks, including the discharge of excess rainwater into the Navigli Canal, through the creation of an educational rain garden using the sponge city concept to enhance the connection of the public spaces of the site. The design informs the revitalization of the canal and the planning of riverside transportation and civic participation in the design of the park from the urban perspective of Milan and Parco Paolo Giovanni II, contributing to the development of a more sustainable and resilient city. |
