Study of Cryogenic Propulsion Tanks on Micro-Launchers with First Stage Reusability Characteristics.

Rel. Eugenio Brusa. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Meccanica (Mechanical Engineering), 2022

Abstract:

The here presented master’s thesis work, conducted at Thales Alenia Space, in Turin, consists in the study of the design of tanks for cryogenic propulsion, exploiting respectively LOx and LCH4 as oxidizer and fuel, together with the aspects inherent to the manufacturing process, for a new concept of rockets based on the possibility of the first stage reusability, aimed to reduce costs. Under the supervision of my company tutor, Ing. Marco Nebiolo, head of TAS mechanical design, I had the possibility to participate to this European project – shared by a pool of manufacturers – contributing actively to the choices of Tank design. I experienced the phases of design at 360 degrees, with the complications dictated by the limits of materials, the availability of raw materials on market and the manufacturing technologies. I learned how to use Altair software, for CAD modification, meshing process and simulations. I also had the possibility to visit the manufacturing plant to experience the modern welding techniques.
