Abstract:

411 ppm is the value reached by the concentration of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere -the highest level in 650,000 years; 1.2°C is the data of the increase of global temperature since 1880; 3.3. mm correspond with the raising of sea level each year. The climate change is a global problem and must be hindered by all professions in a coordinate work. The building industry is responsible for accounting 40% of Carbon Dioxide emissions, playing a major part in a sustainable transformation. Sustainable buildings are recognized as a solution to preserve the environment, reduce energy consumption, waste of water, land use, material resources and waste production. Since the 90’s the building construction began to be settled by sustainability protocols as a means for quantify sustainable constructions. By adopting an integrative process and a holistic approach, they defined methods and practices to reduce the overall environmental impact. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most popular green buildings certification. Since its first version in 1998 more than 96’000 buildings over the world have been certified under LEED rating systems, savings resources and achieving economic benefits. The purpose of the thesis, developed in collaboration with Jacobs Engineering, is to demonstrate the main changes between LEED v4 and LEED v4.1, and verify their applicability to a case study: The New Ferring Headquarters in Copenhagen, designed by Foster + Partners and Jacobs Engineering. Located in Kastrup, a strategic area of Copenhagen, it represents an example of high-performance and sustainable building. The project is pursuing the LEED BD+C for New Construction certification under v3, aiming to obtain the Gold Level. The pre-assessments developed in this work, analysed the prerequisites and the credits necessary to be satisfied in order to achieve LEED Certification under LEED v4 and LEED v4.1. The results show that the LEED Gold target could be obtained for both the pre-assessments following Owner’s decision. In fact, they would require some minor design changes or integrations, and consequently an effort for the Owner
