Abstract:

In this thesis, a comprehensive examination is conducted to scrutinize the life cycle costs associated with the reusable space transportation system, denominated as "Space Rider." The research is organized into a series of structured phases, with the overarching objective of attaining a profound understanding of its paramount significance within the realm of the space sector and, in parallel, providing an estimation of the financial outlays intricately interwoven with the execution of this multifaceted endeavor. Commencing with a sweeping introductory section, the document commences by furnishing a panoramic overview of the landscape of reusable spaceplanes, underlining the compelling necessity for engaging in the intricate practice of life cycle analyses. Following with an exploration of Space Rider's missions and applications, with a pronounced emphasis on its design catering to pivotal roles, notably encompassing cargo transportation, in-orbit demonstrations, and the critical validation of cutting-edge technologies. Subsequently, the contextual backdrop is established by drawing parallels with antecedent space projects, such as IXV, Hermes, and X-37B. In the ensuing section, a literature exposition is presented, delineating the intricacies of the cost estimation methodology. This includes the delineation of life cycle cost allocation and the application of sophisticated parametric models, most notably, the Parametric Cost Model and the utilization of Cost Estimating Relationships (CERs). These analytical instruments serve as the vanguard for refining and enhancing the precision of cost estimations dedicated to the Space Rider project. In line with the contours of this methodological framework, a granular analysis of the life cycle costs associated with Space Rider is undertaken. Adjustments are judiciously applied to the CERs to align them with the distinctive characteristics of the project, and the costs are disassembled methodically into various phases, incorporating the domains of research and development, production, and operations. Consideration is afforded to multifaceted facets, including variable production expenses, maintenance outlays, and operational overheads. Finally, the findings of this comprehensive analysis are presented, and the ensuing implications are subjected to a discussion. The overarching conclusions proffer a compendium of recommendations, poised to guide the future trajectory of the Space Rider project with sagacity and finesse.
