The automotive world is changing extremely fast due to the evolution of many factors that influence and modify the conventional approach. Future mobility challenges and models will change the transportation of people and goods. Even the world of light commercial vehicles (LCV) is already changing its soul due to the costumers needs; e-commerce and e-foods are diffusing more and more. Night delivery, autonomous driving and last mile delivery will be the next hardest challenge to face. The new regulation concerning CO2 and the city centers banned zones are pushing the implementation of electric vehicles (EV). The improvement of technology and of the diffusion of the electric infrastructures help the costumers to get confidence and trust with these new kinds of vehicles. The thesis tries to summarize the most important elements and to explain how they interact with the light commercial vehicle electrification market. Starting from the history of LCV and EV, an overview of the actual market is proposed together with a deep dive analysis of the future obstacles that the world of LCV will be facing. An important part will also explain the enablers of electric vehicles: incentives and infrastructures are deeply analysed. Then an overview of the regulation and targets in terms of CO2 will try to explain why the automotive sector is moving towards xEV. Let’s say that the core of the thesis is on the real usage of light commercial vehicles. The final aim is to identify which costumers could fit their working activity with a BEV. Some threshold, according to the EV characteristics and limits, have been chosen. The output values of the analysis have been compared with the thresholds to select which cluster of clients could change their conventional vehicle with a BEV. In particular, a cluster of data on vehicles monitored for a period of sixth month have been analysed to understand better the typical usage of a vehicle, depending on the final purpose of transport. Thanks to the daily information it became possible to understand the general behavior of the so-called mission (cluster of costumers with the final purpose) but also the dispersion of the data. The focus was not only on the average mileage but also on the distribution of trips and on the number of vehicles that not overcome a mileage threshold very frequently. Finally, some cluster of clients was identified with a fully BEV potential while other with just a partial potential. The information collected during this analysis may help to possibly better address the turning point of the automotive industry basing on some more solid foundation. Nothing better than the data from the real world can direct the production and the market approach towards the right direction. |
