Prussian blue nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

Rel. Barbara Onida. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Dei Materiali, 2018

Abstract:

The aim of the present study is to present a novel approach in nanomedicine based on the application Prussian Blue Nanoparticles (PBNPs) for the eradication of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. By carefully designing their structure and tuning their properties, it is possible to obtain an effective tool to tackle antimicrobial resistance, one of the largest and most serious health threats of the modern world. This work explores the early foundations of the use of nanostructured Prussian Blue as a non-traditional antimicrobial agent, from the synthesis of the nano-objects to a preliminary experimentation on Staphylococcus Aureus, investigating if it can be possible to induce death in bacteria through the synergistic effect of thermal ablation and controlled reactive species release, both virtually performable by the nanoparticles thanks to the photothermal properties of Prussian Blue and the functionalisation of the nanostructures. These first findings show how PBNPs can be easily and cheaply prepared and modified, while collecting some first experimental evidences that can orient future investigations.
