Abstract: |
Car accidents causes can mostly be connected to driver distraction or misjudgement. For this reason, the development and implementation of vehicle safety systems have been grown, especially in the last decades, making Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) fundamental to improve road safety. ADAS are a first step towards autonomous vehicles and as these systems are becoming more complex and safety critical, it is important to analyse the test methods used to validate them. The aim of this thesis is to examine how to test ADAS, and in particular Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), by considering aspects such as suitable test environments and traffic scenarios, verification and validation techniques. More specifically, the thesis starts with an overview of the ADAS functionalities, classification and the current regulations, focusing on the early stages of ADAS development, which rely on simulations, analysing the differences with the real road tests. The verification and validation procedures together with the testing methodology and the building elements of a scenario are illustrated, with a particular focus on ACC and AEB systems. The ACC and AEB systems have been studied implementing a controller logic using Simulink and building testing scenarios, based on current standards, using IPG CarMaker. Moreover, the tests have been parametrized in order to analyse each variation without setting a new scenario for each modification and the results have been evaluated with detailed graphs of each test variation. |
