Abstract
ABSTRACT
The thesis topic moves from the concept of waste produced by the processes of urbanization and industrialization.
The project is located in Limburg province, North East Flanders. Limburg was a poor of resources and sparsely populated area, the colonization of the territory has built a widespread urbanization with the characteristics of the horizontal metropolis. Different phenomena of industrialization have led an over infrastructure and urbanized landscape. The region was characterized by a non- fertile land, the construction of canals and linear infrastructure made the land more hospitable for the development of the society.
A mapping methodology has been used in order to reveal the elements whom the landscape is made of, and to show hidden waste geographies and resources on the ground. Through research by design a new method for discovering the landscape has been tested.
The reading of the territory raised the question about the role of waste landscape in future planning development.
Waste could play a role as a resource on the landscape and it could be integrated in the regeneration of the territory.
The stratification of industrialization which was the driver for the development of the 20th century creates the opportunity to shift urban transformation by rethinking the role of the a next economy.
Urban planning becomes the promoter for a sustainable development.
