Abstract:

During the research phase of this thesis, I was fortunate enough to get in touch with Dr. Theis, the Director of the Max Lock Center, University of Westminster, London; who it turns out, was one of those assigned with the production of a Master Plan for Kaduna in 1967 after Nigeria had gained her independence in 1960. In 2008, together with Triad Assoc, and Benna Assoc., his Max Lock Consultancy in Nigeria was requested by the then Governor of Kaduna State, Arch. Nnamadi Sambo, to revise that Master Plan of Kaduna and its sub-regions based on its growth at that time, taking into consideration urban extensions around the city. When I informed him of my intention to review the proposed master plan for one of those extensions, that is, the Kaduna State Millennium City project, he told me it was a very complicated and difficult topic I had chosen, wished me luck with my work and provided me with very useful materials that aided in the execution of this thesis.

One of the greatest challenges affronted during this whole process, was being unable to get the necessary amount of information needed and relying heavily on information gotten from the internet due to conducting most of my research in Turin, Italy. It was during this process that I stumbled upon a brochure presented for the proposed Master Plan of the Kaduna State Millennium City project, also referred to as "the New Kaduna" on the website of the immediate past Governor of the state, Alh. Yero Ramalan, that was identical to the proposal made by the consortium hired for this project; yet the Master Plan I was finally able to obtain from KASUPDA, the Kaduna State Urban Planning & Development Authority, was different. Finding this challenging and at the same time quite intriguing, I carefully studied and reviewed both concepts, eventually producing a new revised Master Plan for that area taking hints from both, using it as a basis for the one produced for this thesis and correcting errors which I felt needed to be adjusted.

Although I was able to obtain the National Building Codes, unfortunately it did not assist me in a way I thought it would. Building design classifications were indicated but in the case of residences for example, there was no indication of the maximum area one was allowed to build on, the minimum area that should be dedicated for services such as green areas etc. Therefore, with the help of my supervisors and understanding the building and structure classification obtained from the building code I was able to make some rational choices as to what sort of services were needed in the Master Plan and how to properly distribute them so as to avoid clusters of services in one area and a lack of it in another; also to try to reduce the possibility of the creation of slums in densely populated areas.

In order to try to propose a residential building type, it was necessary to understand the history of architecture not only in Nigeria but, for the purpose of this thesis, also in Northern Nigeria, concentrating on the North Central area, which is where Kaduna is located. Information here was also quite difficult to find because unfortunately, the evolution of architecture in the country is not well documented. Tradition and culture define a society in Nigeria, without this tradition and culture a society in this part of the world cannot exist; unfortunately, especially as regards to architecture, due to the colonisation experienced, tradition was lost because building form, distribution and technologies were, and are still being imported here that may not necessarily be suited for the climate found in these parts.

I think the best solution is to try to find the right balance between tradition and culture with sustainable technologies and materials available in the world now; for in order to move forward, one should try not to forget or disregard the past.
