Abstract:

The global transition towards electrified mobility represents one of the most profound transformations in the automotive industry. Increasingly stringent environmental regulations, technological innovation, and evolving consumer expectations are accelerating the shift from internal combustion engines towards electric propulsion systems. Within this evolving landscape, Range Extended Electric Vehicles have emerged as a strategic intermediate solution, combining the advantages of battery elec- tric vehicles with the flexibility of conventional powertrains. This thesis investigates the technical and commercial dimensions of REEV technology, focusing on the Leapmotor C10 REEV as a representative case study. The research is divided into two main parts: a technical analysis of the series hybrid architecture and an applied study of the vehicle’s market positioning. The first part explores the operating principles of REEV systems, emphasizing their distinctive configuration in which the internal combustion engine acts solely as a generator, decoupled from the wheels. This layout enables the ICE to operate at steady state conditions with high thermal efficiency while the electric motor provides continuous traction. Key aspects such as energy flow, powertrain layout, energy management strategies, and performance evaluation are analyzed and compared with other hybrid and electric architectures. These concepts are then applied to the Leapmotor C10, examining its pow- ertrain configuration, driving modes, and efficiency characteristics. The C10 REEV demonstrates how a compact range extender can effectively overcome range anxiety while maintaining the benefits of electric propulsion. From a commercial perspective, the study highlights the vehicle’s strategic role in Leapmotor’s European expansion, offering a competitive and flexible alternative in markets where charging infrastructure remains limited. Overall, the thesis concludes that REEVs represent a viable transitional tech- nology capable of bridging the gap between BEVs and conventional hybrids. The Leapmotor C10 exemplifies how integrated engineering design, intelligent control, and market-oriented strategy can accelerate the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions in both emerging and mature markets.
