A Prototype for Contextual Revitalization The heritage site of Musawwarat es-Sufra in eastern Sudan is a rare archaeological treasure of the ancient Meroitic civilization, marked by monumental sandstone temples, mudbrick structures, and sacred iconography. Despite its historical and cultural value, the site faces significant threats due to environmental degradation and neglect. This thesis seeks to revive and reinterpret the site through an architectural approach grounded in heritage conservation, material honesty, and cultural continuity. Working within the discipline of Architecture for Heritage, the project explores rammed earth and timber as primary construction materials—both of which are contextually appropriate, low-impact, and symbolically linked to the site’s original building techniques.
