Abstract:

This thesis explores the integration of sensors in Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) systems to enhance road safety through simulation and control in critical scenarios. It bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application in autonomous vehicle technologies, focusing on the synergy between radar systems and advanced Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. Employing the CARLA simulator, the study replicates real-world traffic conditions to test the responsiveness of AEB systems under various scenarios. It highlights the development of reactive and proactive braking strategies, their interaction with other safety systems, and a methodological approach to testing these technologies. Through comprehensive analysis, the research identifies potential improvements in AEB systems and suggests sensor integration into future vehicle designs. The structured approach of the thesis covers integrating sensors in AEB systems for vehicles, starting with an emphasis on simulation's critical role in ADAS research. It examines the historical development of AEB systems, analyzes previous simulations, and underscores CARLA's significance in advancing simulation research. Subsequent chapters explore emergency braking logic, including reactive versus proactive strategies and the integration of radar, camera sensors, and V2V communication. A methodological approach for application testing showcases various scenarios to evaluate AEB systems under UN/ECE Regulation No 152. The analysis of vehicle responses using different AEB versions forms a significant portion of the thesis, leading to a conclusion that recaps the study's achievements and discusses theoretical, practical implications, and the potential for real-world application. This approach ensures a logical flow and comprehensive understanding of sensor integration in AEB systems to enhance road safety.
