Abstract:

This thesis project delves into the comprehensive analysis of the ulexite exploitation process, from mine extraction to final product, with a focus on technical enhancements while considering bureaucratic and social constraints. Initially concentrating on the Laguna Salinas mine and the Rio Seco plant in Arequipa, Peru, the study examines planning operations, raw material extraction, treatment processes, and transfer logistics. Special attention is given to the interconnectedness of these units within the Inkabor company and the challenges they face, including environmental factors, transportation costs, and community relations. Through meticulous assessment, it is revealed that the primary hurdles lie in external circumstances rather than internal inefficiencies. At the Laguna Salinas mine, operational challenges arise due to the demanding terrain, necessitating custom machinery for enhanced productivity. However, community resistance complicates equipment upgrades, impacting transportation efficiency. Conversely, the Rio Seco processing plant operates relatively smoothly, with potential improvements focused on material consistency and particle size optimization. The Challapampa deposit faces typical storage limitations, mitigated by innovative drying methods to extend its lifespan, and repurpose by-products. Transportation between units remains a challenge due to distance, with ongoing research exploring methods to enhance material content during extraction using advanced screening technologies. Moreover, secondary research on equipment suitable for marshy environments underscores the interdisciplinary approach of the study, highlighting the need for specialized solutions to address complex operational environments. While immediate solutions remain elusive, this thesis offers a comprehensive understanding of Inkabor's production challenges, laying the groundwork for future research and potential collaborations with academic partners specialized in relevant fields.
