The relationship between export and the market share of low-cost carriers

The aviation industry is a fast-growing sector, and low-cost airlines have gained an important share of the market in recent years. This study aims to examine the relationship between export from the province of Turin and the market share of low-cost airlines operating at the airport of Turin. Following analyses of the airline industry, the state of the aviation industry's economy, and the notion of low-cost airlines, the thesis proceeds to examine data on exports via Turin Airport for the previous six years, as well as details on the activities and market share of low-cost airlines operating in SAGAT towards the different destination. STATA will be used to analyze the relationship. It will make use of a database that links each destination from Turin airport to a percentage of LCC airlines that serve it, along with the relative export over time. Preliminary results suggest a positive relationship between increased cargo export and increased market share of low-cost airlines at the Turin airport. This association could be due to several factors, including demand for air travel by firms involved in cargo export and airline pricing policies. A comprehensive analysis of this relationship could provide important insights for strategic decisions by airlines, airport authorities, and firms involved in exporting. This study contributes to a better understanding of the dynamic aviation market and its connections to local economic activity.
