Abstract:

Electrocardiogram production is one of the most reliable and most widely used tests for detecting heart problems and evaluating the heart’s health. Although it is traditionally performed by ECG machines at medical institutions, most recent developments in electrocardiography enabled even small mobile devices to perform this measurement. At the Neuronica Laboratory at Polytechnic of Turin, a group of experts developed PulsECG, an electronic wristband capable of acquiring an electrocardiogram and transmitting the digital data to a mobile application for analysis. The goal of this thesis was to design and develop a desktop application where the electrocardiogram data from PulsECG can be displayed and analyzed. In addition to this, the electrocardiogram data was supposed to be used to acquire information about the heart rate of the patient, using a special algorithm, and to perform detection of atrial fibrillation, one of the most common types of heart arrhythmia. The application, fulfilling all of those design specifications, was developed using Java and the JavaFX application platform. It has an intuitive GUI and is ready to be used by all users of PulsECG.
