In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of recycling and recovering construction and demolition waste (CDW). By substituting traditional natural virgin aggregates with CDW aggregates, a potential for the reduction landfill necessities has been observed, leading to a preservation of valuable natural resources. CDW is actively encouraged as an alternative to improve the environmental sustainability of the construction industry. It has already found use in certain aspects of pavement construction, such as embankment and subgrade formation. As is the case with natural aggregates, the mechanical properties of CDW can be enhanced through stabilization techniques, making it suitable for use in the subbase layer of pavements. Despite the proven effectiveness of CDW stabilization, it is still not widely practiced. Furthermore, the current methods of utilizing stabilized CDW aggregates often involve the use of traditional Portland cement, which has a notable environmental impact during its production. This thesis is another contribution to the INTREC project (Innovative technologies for recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste in road construction). It deals with the construction of an experimental field trial and the collection of specimens for the assessment of the mechanical features of CDW. It will be another contribution to the expansion of the current understanding of the recycled aggregates stabilized with ordinary and non-traditional binders, shedding more light on their performances in real projects. The research is conducted in two phases: (i) a field characterization and (ii) a laboratory characterization of the mixtures. The field characterization phase involves the construction of a road segment in La Loggia, located south of Torino. The subbase layer of the road will consist of both granular and cement-stabilized mixtures, compared with experimental references using natural aggregates and mixtures containing innovative binders. The main objective of the field test is to evaluate the performance of these materials under demanding traffic conditions. The project includes various aspects such as construction planning, scheduling of testing activities in both the field and the laboratory. In the laboratory characterization phase, the mixtures are subjected to mechanical tests, including resilient modulus and strength assessments. The results obtained from these tests were compared with previous works of study, aiming to furtherly study the influence that different factors have on the mechanical performance of the recycled aggregates and addressing environmental concerns. |
