Development of an Engine Model for XiL plant and for Multi-Physics Vehicle Model.

Rel. Federico Millo. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Meccanica, 2023

Abstract:

The thesis has been carried out in POWERTECH Engineering S.r.l (PWT), en- gineering consulting that provides services of simulation CAE (0D, 1D-CFD and 3D-CFD) to the automotive industry, in collaboration with Aston Martin Lagonda (AML), well-known automaker. This work has been developed with the GT-SUITE software, able to create multi-physics models, used for the analyses of engine performance, engine acoustics, thermal management, etc. Nowadays, the simulation is taking on an increasingly important role, reducing significantly times and costs of production. The starting point of this thesis is the engine model previously realized in another thesis. The project described uses this model, referred to as "Fast Running Model" (FRM), and has been developed in two stages. As a first step the FRM was converted into a Real-Time (RT) one, able to be used for Hardware-In-the-Loop (HiL) applications. The second step includes the coupling with a vehicle model provided by AML. The main goals of this project are the implementation of a model usable for the control unit testing, for example the Engine Control Unit (ECU), and an engine model integration able to guarantee a better prediction and more accurate results, compared to the engine map previously configured in the vehicle model.
