Automatic tool development for LPT preliminary assessments.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis work is the development of an automatic Tool which provides preliminary assessments of LPT stages of aeronautical engines. It produces a quick aeromechanical feedback during the aerodynamic design, leading to an easier interaction between the two disciplines. The standard process starts with the aerodynamic design of the airfoil and then it proceeds with the aeromechanical analyses, coming back to the aerodynamic team for modifications in the geometry, if needed. Thanks to the Tool, the interactions between the two teams are reduced, as the time requested for the design activity. The Tool receives as input the aerodynamic data and it creates the 3D airfoil and the CAD of the blade, with consistent inner and outer elements. The geometry is modeled through the software Unigraphics NX. Then the FE model and the desired analysis are performed thanks to ANSYS Workbench. With the tool it is possible to do static analyses and pre-stressed modal analyses, as well as the evaluation of the Campbell diagram, the flutter analysis and so on, all of this automatically. The aim of this work is the improvement of the tool in the assessment of the static analysis. The research of the best setting of Ansys Workbench is developed, in order to provide the validation of the FE model generated by the tool. This led to the modification of the meshing algorithm, and to the creation of a procedure to generate a good quality mesh in an automatic way, with a particular attention to the mesh of the fillets and of the leading edge and trailing edge of the blade. The results coming from the Tool must be coherent with the ones obtained with msc NASTRAN, the one in which AvioAero legacy is built.
